First of all, you need to upgrade your memory. 256MB is the minimum to run Windows XP. I suggest upgrading to at least a total of 512MB. You will notice a difference, but to get even more speed you may want to go all the way to 1024MB. Other than increasing memory you want to perform a Disk Cleanup and a Disk Defragment at least once a month. This will get rid of useless files and make accessing from the hard drive quicker.

Run msconfig, click on startup tab and de-select all unwanted programs.
Search for*.tmp and *.$$$ and delete all these files.
Get a registry cleaner.
Manually delete unwanted files.
Keep the desktop as clear of icons as possible.
Since you have just 256MB RAM, choose a simple dektop background and don't select stretch.
Perform disk cleanup and defragment often.
Install an antivirus that doesn't eat up too much of RAM. AVG is a good option.
Finally, do a google search.

http://bartman1.blogspot.com/- Try that- worked very well for me.
I would defiantly recommend buying more RAM- this will boost the speed of your computer so much, make sure its the right type though.
