Unity is a nice idea, but peace in our world is maintained through the potential threat of aggression. These checks and balances are established through military resources and geo-political positioning.
Case in point, Iraq. The actions there have upset the internal balance that kept rivals (shi'ites, kurds, sunnis) at bay and in check. Furthermore, as the dominoes of violence continue to fall, the ripple effects are spreading outward. The balance in the region has shifted to the point where Iran can thump its chest beyond its borders to the west and north without fear of retaliation from Saddam or the Taliban. So, the very nation we are targeting to engage next, might not have been in any position to thumb its nose at the West if the balance of power in the region had not been disrupted in the first place? Most likely, yes.
Would that have constituted 'true' peace? Is peace defined as the absence of active aggression? Probably not, but I'd take that definition right now.

Not a chance without unity. There is far too much greed in the world today to have world peace. If you just think of the words "United Nations" , you would think unity. Truth is it should be called "Divided Nations". When there is a serious trouble in the world "Darfur" you would think the world could be united on it to same millions of people. The United Nations cannot even unite on that issue.

We are closer to world peace now than any other time in history.
Of course, that means very little since we are always on the verge of mass annihilation. There will be a semblance of the much alusive world peace, but it won't be in any of our lifetimes. Maybe in a hundred or hundred and fifty years.
World unity will only be achieved when people of all nations and continents learn to put their petty bigotrys, prejudices, religions, and customs aside and allow others to be different.
Let change begin with the individual. For instance, when conservatives can allow liberals to be whatever they are and liberals allow conservatives to be whatever they are without the childish name calling and bickering. That doesn't mean seeing eye to eye; just agreeing to disagree.

The world is divided not only among countries, but more importantly, among groups, especially religious groups.
This is the reason for the turmoil going on.
There exists division among religions, and even within religions.
With no unity among all religions, the world must go on fighting.
When the day arives where all religions sit down at the peace table, discuss differences and find solutions, then there will spring peace for all mankind.
Merely having countries discussing peaceful solutions won't cut it.

lets face it world peace is just a faraway fantasy. although we like to think that we can achieve such an outlandish idea there is no way that you can unite 6 billion people without some kind of conflict. i wish things were different but thats life. people live to disagree.

Human nature is violent, no matter what there will always be the people who think selfishly. World peace can never exist, but it can get close.

There won't be peace on this world until we eliminate all the ist and ist orginizations like Ahjamdinijad, Assad, OBL, Hamas, and Fatah are wiped off the earth. It also won't happen until democracy replaced those militant regimes that believe that ANYONE who doesn't believe as they do should be destroyed.

World peace is an illusion. You definitely are "mad" for world peace because it will never happen.

Lack of Education worldwide is the problem.
This world is dominated by "believes" without checks, by aasumptions without proof, by feeling without thinking.
And the forgetting of Morality and Balance.
We are NO better than the cavemen.
