Your computer doesn't have enough RAM to run efficiently. You need 512Mb of ram to efficiently run XP SP2 and all the other updates you need.

SP2 is the devil! LOL...the upgrade runs things in the background that weren't running prior to the install. Go to start/run/msconfig. This is the system configuration utility. Go to the start up tab (all the way to the right) and click it. You will find a list of programs that windows runs at start up. Verify what is what and shut down (uncheck) the ones you fell are unnecessary then reboot. Hope this helps!

Also go to Tools on the toolbar at the top of the page and click Windows Update, and when the Microsoft Update page opens let it scan your computer and make sure that you have all the updates installed. USE the Express Option, and it will tell you what you need. Dowmload them and REBOOT. I would not choose IE 7 although unless you want it. ALSO follow hylwd29's advise after you are sure your computer is up to date.

if you have macaffee or norton installed check the settings - is it doing loads of continual background checks ?
