My 14 mth, Ella, was writhing in pain from 8-1am last night due to (we suspect) trapped wind. We didn't know how to help her. She has also suffered from constipation for 2 weeks which is causing her distress. She eats a varied diet and isn't a fussy eater. She cannot have dairy however, and is on Wysoy formula (must check with Doc if i can use alternative milk now- tried goats but she's not fussed with it). Could the Wysoy be stuffing her up? She didn't have probs with it before. any advice gratefully receive. thank you. ema

First of all, you should be at the docs now with your babby....asking him about the trapped wind etc, please go?

Second, Have you recently strengthened the milk mixture? ..Fruit juices usually do the trick as far as constipation goes in lil' uns. though again you have to be careful and maybe need to dilute that too. Im not a doc and my daughter is thirteen now so its a while since I had ant practice, but I'm sure there will be other doting mums on here that will offer sound advice.

Maybe cut out solids for a day or so?

Why is Ella still on formula? My son switched to regular milk at 12 months. Try giving Ella some prune juice for the constipation. Also, I've heard that apple and pear juice are good. They make gas drops that you can get from the pharmacy. Or maybe it is the formula as most formulas are very rich in iron. Talk to your doc about trying regular milk. If she can eat raisins that would probably help too.

As I prepare for the backlash I am sure to receive from every overprotective mother out there, allow me to tell you how I cured my little girls chronic constipation. From about the time she was 5 months old my daughter would stay constipated. This was so terrible painful from her as well as me because I hate to see my daughter in pain. We tried everything we could think of. I started giving her whole grain pancakes or waffles for breakfast. Prunes, pears, basically anything she would take that was high in fiber. The second time we took her to her doc for this problem he had us use a suppository. Sure it worked, but it made her miserable. On the third visit he ended up prescribing a laxative that we put in her bottle. This worked fine, but it tended to give her the runs and her bum stayed red and raw as a result.
I finally got the idea to just try her on some benefiber...it is non thickening and non gritty. It was great because it dissolved completely in her bottle. I figured what the heck, it was natural fiber, what could it hurt to try it for a week or so. If it didn't work, I would just stop giving it to her. Well, it worked like a charm. I put it in her morning bottle, because that is the only one she is guaranteed to empty, and it's important that she gets enough fluid with the fiber, otherwise it only makes the constipation worse.
Being 14 months old, you can also try mixing a little of it with each of her meals. Just make sure she drinks enough water or juice with her meals.

I know what you are going through as my daughter also suffered with constipation as a baby- up until she turned 2
The best thing I found to use was LACTULOSE- you can get it on prescription from the gp and this will help to soften stools and get things going
I'd take Ella to the gp anyway just to get her checked over
I wish you both all the best as it is just as distressing for you as your daughter- you feel so helpless

Prunes are a miracle with constipation, as she is not fussy with food you should try her if that does not work then any fruit juices like orange or apple will ease her, also i think you should definatley take her to your doctors/health visitor, just incase its more than wind. Goodluck

I think gripe water helps. I;d go ask a pharmasist, but if this has gone on for 2 weeks I'd def be down to the doctors!!! They may prescribe some Lactolose or something.

lay her on her back and with your palm rub her tummy from belly button towards her feet do that for a few minutes then lift both legs and bend at the knees, up and down a couple of times then when the knees are up go side to side with her knees then sit her up and rub her back and then repeat usually this helps with wind.
