The way Federer is playing now, there's no telling how long he will remain at the top. At the Australian Open he clearly showed why he's the best in the business. Roddick was completely lost out there in the Semi's against him, and Gonzo played excellent tennis to get to the final, and beat some great players along the way Blake, Hewitt, Nadal and Haas, but Federer is a different animal all together, he's got the whole package, great court sense awareness, has all of the shots in the book, and knows how to play the right shots at the right times. So it will be at least 3 to 4 years barring injury that he will be #1.
His only thing to conquer is now the French Open, and how does he solve the Nadal puzzle on Clay, it won't be easy, but I think this is Federer's year, and he gets the job done.
We should all be so lucky to see Federer in our lifetime, there might not be another like him for a L-O-N-G time!!

As long as Federer win 2 majors in one year he would still be #1. Therefore, I assume that he will keep this up for another 5 years and then we will see if he's going to loose his mojo or not. Federer is consider to be the best of all time and we should be lucky seeing this genuis in our lifetime. Just like Laver (an 11 time grand slam) said, "there is too much talent in one body" refering to Federer.

I'd say for about 3 - 4 years, assuming no major injuries. If what Tony Roche (his coach) says is true - that Federer hasn't peaked yet and will only do so when he's 26, 27, 28 or 29, then it is definitely safe to assume that Federer will be keeping his flag flying high for some time still.
The other players are not even up to his standard currently, imagine if he improves even more - what chance do they have to grab his title even if they do improve? Roger is smart and he won't overstress his body risking injury, so I think it is quite highly possible for him to remain the numero uno for years to come.

hopefully as long as he is motivated to play. although not a hardcore fan of tennis, i find his games riveting and sometimes awe inspiring. even if he drops off a bit, he seems to be well ahead of the field. close matches are great, but watching a true master is something i can tell my grandkids about...
