Every living thing gets it's energy (food) from the sun (with a couple of unicellular exceptions at the bottom of the ocean). Plants photosynthesize sunlight to create their own energy (food). Herbivores (cows, sheep, deer, antelope, etc) eat the plants and get their energy that way. Carnivores eat the herbivores that ate the plants and get their energy that way. So the original source of everybody's food was the sun.

Surface organisms like plants use sunlight to provide energy. You eat plants. Not all organisms use sunlight directly or indirectly. The tubeworms of the ocean depths use heat rising from the Earth's core.

They don't. There are a few that live on the bottom on the sea sucking on geothermal vents that provide them with heat and chemical food.

Everything else requires warmth from the sun, and energy that originates in photosynthesis.
