Most bats are nocturnal. They fly and forage for their food (bugs) at night. This means that they need safe places to sleep during the day. Caves provide the kind of protected shelter in which bats can thrive. Hanging from the ceiling of a cave, bats are out of reach of most of their enemies. Some of the most successful species of bats live in large cave colonies. Some of these colonies have millions of members, even up to 20 million! Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico once had 7-8 million, but now has about 1 million.

Some fruit bats live in trees. But caves provide protection from daylight predators which will not enter the dark places of caves.

Many bats live in places that are not caves such as trees, crevices in rocks and particulary in houses or buildings. They may spend periods alone as well as in communities.
In winter communal roosts of bats of different species can gather in areas that have a stable temperature because they maintain a slow metabolism to preserve energy during periods when food availabilty is reduced. Caves have this function. They become more active as outside temperatures rise and food becomes available, allowing them to consider breeding.
Films such as Dracula have given bats a bad name that they do not deserve as they play a very important role in global ecosystems.

Many bats roost in other places besides caves such as trees, under bridges, and in other manmade structures. Many bats are found in urban areas and there really are not a whole lot of caves available there!

Bats also live in the attics of old buildings, and in the brains of some of the idiots who answered your question. I once lived in an od house which had the attic full of bats. I enjoyed watching them fly out by the dozens when it started to get really dark.

I think its something to do with the sonar they use..! inside a cave the sonar will rebound from every direction, so they will feel enclosed and thus safe? just a theory !!
