Go get the little guy. I've never had a bearded dragon, but I've had water dragons, and I've got two iguanas. Best bet is to get a book, spend a couple days reading up, and go for it. Oh, make sure you have some astro turf on the bottom of the tank. It's the easiest thing to clean, and it doesn't hold odors and bacteria.

Good luck..

The next step would be to get a book on beardeds and do research, research, reasearch. I would also find the spot in your house where you plan to keep the tank. Then find out the optimum temps for beardies and see if you can maintain that level in that spot before you get the beardy, if not, move the tank.

I would try to find a reptile store, or a private pet shop that has a good looking reptile department and talk to the people there. Petsmart is great for the basics, but they usually only have texbook knowledge, not a lot of "hands on".

We have had a variety of reptiles over the years, and have found the knowledge at the smaller stores to be the best.

Good luck.

i am the proud owner of a 3 year old bearded dragon... i've done my research and have been pretty successful. first thing i want to let you know is that the 20 gallon wont last long... i have mine in a 90 which is by far big enough. you will beed at least a 40 of 50 gallon. don't listen to the guy the said anything about tropical crap. bearded dragons are desert animals. they need sand, sallow water, a few fake plants, and oddly enough, they really like to climb. you will want to start your dragon on paper towels or newspaper. I lost one of my dragons when it was a baby from eatting substrate. when they are young, they don't digest well. when he is a couple months old, slowly introduce him to sand. i suggest calcium sand because it is round as opposed to regular sand which is jagged. give him a swallow water dish, but be prepared, all reptiles think water is a toilet. not to mention, when he is older and has sand in the cage, he will get a lot in the water, so it will need to be changed often. be sure that you are feeding him both crickets and vegetables. i suggest growing your own crickets because as he gets older, it will get expensive to feed him 50 crickets every couple of days. search "raising crickets" online and you will find a lot of really good info. one big thing i have learned is that you get to know your lizard over time and every lizard is different and you will learn what makes your beardie happy. good luck and if you have any more questions you can email me at natkyle79@yahoo.com (i'm logged into my boyfriends account right now)

Hail
At the end of the day these guys have given you all the info you need but every beardie is different with thier own personalities and preferences so it'll be trial and error to find out what he likes. One thing i don't know if anyone else has experienced: i recently introduced my 2yr old beardie Gandalf to a mirror. He didn't seem to bother at first but after 20mins he seemed to think it was another beardie and wen't totally ballistic, battering himself off the glass, head bobbing and showing his black beard.

20 gallons wont be enough in just a few months. You really didnt need a heat lamp either..a regular household bulb is more cost effective and works just as well.

You need at LEAST a 40 gallon tank.

you need the sand of course and it is also a good idea to have something for them to climb on rather then to hide in. you dont really need the water bowels as they are a desert animal. just a spray bottle with water in it misted over them once a day is fine. they get most of the moisture they need from there food. you need a calcium duster for there food. you also need a under tank heater for it. make sure you put all the heating elements on one side of the tank. you don't really need the red basking lamp that is for tropical reptiles.
