I have these Ikea light pine shelves/racks ( called Gorm) that have turned horribly mouldy and grey after the recent bouts of continuous rain for days and days here(due to global warming no doubt). I have tried to clean it off with Lysol but some mould residue is still there; i reckon that to prevent that from happening again, might be better to varnish or paint it. Will this help? And what type of varnish/paint should be used? Is there also any other way to stop my collection of board games from suffering the same fate? (Some are already beginning to show signs of mould). Did consider getting a room dehumdifier or buying lots of cupboards and putting powder dehumidifiers in each - but both of these solutions involve spending a fair bit - at least $1000 - which I can't afford right now. Thanks for your suggestions.

For wood polyurethane is the best clear coat and acrylic or oil based paints for preventing mold. Latex is ok if your humidity isn't out of control.

Anything you do to the games will be a waste of time unless you get a dehumidifier. You can clean mold and mildew up, but if you haven't eliminated the moisture it's coming back. Which is cheaper? New games and shelves, or a dehumidifier? By the way, where I am dehumidifiers are $100-$300 for new..

paint isn't going to stop mold. if you want to clean mold, you need to use a bleach based cleaner to KILL the mold. and don't listen to florida guy's answer. oil is the worst thing for mold. oil based paints are MORE prone to mildew than latex/acrylic paints. i too am confused about the dehumidifier option. i bought one a few years ago for less than $200, in the USA. even if you are in antartica, i dont think the shipping would be $800.00! buy a dehumidifier and be done with it.

keep them in one room and give them plenty of these to run through and stuff. put cardboard around the base boards and tobasco sauce. if they don't chew then let them run around otherplaces to explore. if they do apply more tocasco sauce andwait until they learn that it will always be ther eand then slowly start to take it away by letting it fade more an dmaybe they won't go back.

minwax polyurethene will seal and coat your wood and games,it dries clear and hard and waterproof if you seal all exsposed areas,if you need to add some color the have minwax stain and polyurethene in one. you can buy it most hardware stores like lowes or home depot even walmarts.

you can go back to IKEA and buy the paints/staints that they have there for their type of wood products.... Only they know the condition of their products....
