~~ I'm not certain where you live, but a short bus trip or train trip (all little boys seem to love trains) would be ideal.
You could have a couple of nights in a (reasonable) motel and go to attractions that are not too expensive (theatres, zoos, hiking, parks etc). Just doing it together will be exciting in itself.

~~ Or as someone else suggested why not stay home; but make it like a holiday.
Eat picnics at the park, or the occasional diner. Bike riding together, kite flying.
Visit all the local places you don't normally get to.
Are there any sport events happening locally?
Is there a lake, creek or river nearby - there are many activities you can do there.

Hi, Why not take a bus,or a train to get to where you,and your son whats to vacation at. There's nothing wrong with that. Call both places, and see how much it would cost both ways. A Friend

Just do what my parents did when I was young, introduce him to some games, like maybe Uno, or some other card or board game. I know it isn't as good but it worked for me and my sister when we were also on limited funds with the parents.

Eventually they will begin to understand why you can't go everywhere you want to, and they'll accept it. Also, even if he's young, unless he's just a toddler, you may want to explain to him why you can't afford to go somewhere like Disneyworld or land, he should understand in time.

You could find a local hotel with a pool and a few resturants near that you could take him to. It could still be a vacation with out having to go very far. Or something with a theater near by.

I don't know where you live, but sometimes we play tourist where we live and go to all the sights. You can also visit relatives and go sightseeing there. Disney World is very expensive.
