Music is an industry after all. The record companies have their eye on the dollars and are after a certain look, talent be damned.
That's actually the reason Sinead O'Conner shaved her head. Her record company told her they loved her voice and would sign her, but they wanted her to have a sexier, girlier look. She basically said 'screw you' and shaved her head in protest of this silliness... and she got her contract anyhow.

Unfortunately, we have become a society that thrives on beauty and sales are made by how we percieve someone else. The prettier the artist, the more we like. Sex sells and good looks even if we know they are made up, gets our attention. We are the average. What we seek has to be at a higher level.

Might have something to do with the bilion dollar industry they are icons for. After the best creams, makeup, jewelery, surgeries, duct-taped bodyparts, spa getaways, designer clothing and personal trainers do their job, these people get filmed/shot through special lenses, AND touched up, so (God forbid) a tiny pimple doesn't show.

becuase the world today veiws and judges people by their looks , and not always their talent... back in the 80's they had some ugly *** hair , and styles and normal looking ppl in bands... now you have to be macho man , or skinny christina with blonde hair to make it....
i myself am a singer , and i'm going to a talant compitition to be signed with epic records is my goal... one of the main producers with be there , and im' not your average sized 0 pant chick....
