Biodegradable material are those that can be digested and recycled by the microorganisms that live in the soil, for example an orange peel is biodegrable because it will be absorbed if you bury it in your yard.
non-biodegrables are those that either cannot be digested or take a lot of time to recycle through the natural cycles of the nature. A good example is plastics which take at least 150 years to degrade.

Biodegradable means that the things that are converted into simpler substances by natural means (bacteria,fungi,etc)and vice versa for non biodegradable.

I believe that biodegradable means something that nature will reclaim on its own. A steel can buried in the soil will naturally rust away returning its minerals to the soil. An aluminum can will not and neither will a plastic bottle.
