here is an excerpt from a book i have:
a fixture of irish folklore since the eigth century, banshees are not evil creatures, but their haunting cries can make them quite terrifying.their most distincetive feature is the eye, turned fiery red from centuries of weeping for those the loved and mourn.most often described as a tall, gaunt women with straming white hair, the banshee usually wears a green dress coverd by a gray, hooded cloak.occasiaonally, however, she may appear as a small old women or a beatiful golden-heaired girl dressed in red.
each banshee is said to be devoted to just one extended irish family, serving them for centuries, but appearing only when a family member is about to die.the most famous banshee of ancient times was named Aibhill, and she haunted the royal family of O'Brien.according to the ledgend, the aged king Brian Boru went off to a battle, knowing he would not survive, for Abihill had appeared to him the night before, washing the clothes of soldiers until the water ran red with blood.
in later years banshees were known to herald dealth by wailing or keening under windows of the dying, sometimes floating up several stories to do so.in a famous account from the seventeeth century,a guest at an irsih estate described her fright upon hearing a voice in the middle of the night:"i drew the curtain and in the encasement of the window,i saw by the light of the moon,a woman leaning into the window, with red hair and pale ghastly complexsion.she spoke loud,in a tone i had never heard, and then, with a sigh more like a wind then a breath, she vanished."as it turned out, someone had died in that house on that same very night.
a banshee may also remain at a distance,a solitary figure who signals a death by pacing the hills around the family home(the word banshee comes from the irish word bean si,meaning "women of the hills")or sitting on a stone wall.sometimes she isn't even visible at all,but her piercing wails leave no doubt about her presence.on the rare occasion when several banshees appear together,it forbodes that the death of someone very great or reverd.
only the oldest families, who can trace their lineage to the legendary irish heroes of the early middle ages, are said to have banshees.originally this included only families whose last names began with "O" or "Mac",but after centuries of intermarriage, hundreds or others can now make this claim.attuned as a banshee are to bloodlines, they will follow their families wherever they may go.thus, the banshee's wails are said to be heard in England,America, and anywhere the Irish have settled.

Well as you said, you are from Ireland, and that's where the myth of the "Screaming Banshee" originated from. I think you could of heard a "Screaming Banshee" but it is pretty unlikely. But I actually have a question for you; I know it might seem a bit strange, but has there been any deaths where you live when you started hearing the screams? If there has, write back :D hope I helped!

no, if you did in fact hear a banshee, then that means you DO NOT die, but someone you know does/someone in the neighbourhood does.. The person who is going to die, never hears her........................this of course is just a legend ,so dont take my word that someone you know is going to die, i was just explaining the legend ;-)

When you see a banshee, but she doesn't scream, that means you would die today. Maybe she wasn't a banshee, and you thought she was one.

I myself have seen the banshee and with my friend at my side he had seen her too she made me feel warm but also protective of myself at the same time but made him feel horrible and stiff he couldnt move hard to explain and its odd that not even a minute before then the friend i was with said he heard someone whispering help me "when im done ill explain my theories btw" so after he said he heard that we were walking in his backyard to the backdoor to get in the house im looking at the ground watching my step when he stops me and i look up and that second felt like forever her face was empty no eyes and it seemed that her mouth was always open her skin was grey and seemed dead and decayed she had white hair but if i didnt see her face she would look like a floating sheet she was looking directly at my friend untill i said "what the" then she put her focus on me and thats when i felt that i shouldnt be scared she begins to jump and spin like she was playing and skipping away from me then she just flies impossibly fast away and stops about 30 yards away from us and stares at that moment i turn and look at my friend about to ask if im crazy and hes just stiff as a board and i turn and look back at it and its still there i can see the empty eyes and open mouth still i step torward it and point and she turns to her right and my left and flies so fast that you can hear her clothing or whatever flapping sounding like hundreds of giant birds flapping and disappears into the woods after i ask him what he made of the situation and he said he felt horrible and i asked about the flapping sound and he said he couldnt hear anything over the crazy loud wailing screams which explains why her mouth was open as soon as he said screams my geek side kicks in and i knew immediately that she was a banshee and that it wasnt good news that i couldnt hear her most likely she was warning him about me but i felt good when i saw her despite how confused i was i think that she was happy cause she could save me from a death and the way i think she saved me was by sacrificing his dog :,( because the next day the dog was dead but i know by lore that all the friends and family of the presumed to die will hear the screams even miles away but the one who is supposed to die will only hear her flutters and thats all i heard either she took the dogs life cause it was his time or replaced me with him or im soon to die but the way she made me feel made me not scared of death it felt nice and she moved so free and mystical i think her job is to let you know that its ok, ive been trying to make sense of this for a couple days and that is what i think happened to me they a very real and i wouldnt be surprised if almost any lore or myth you could think of is very real in someway it could be anything that you heard but i tell you this story to let you know that the possibility of a banshee is very very real and she is a good being also you heard her so im guessing you have no chance of dying hope this helps also i think the help me my friend heard was to help her save me and she was in a way asking permission to take the life of the dog? i dont know and your grandpa was right dont pick up the brush and try to save your friend or family member presumed to die the lore says that she comes to the friends and family members so you can help them because she knows theres a possibility to save them
