Vlad Tepes is first on my list for this.

That man was fearless, ruthless, a military genious, and one of the first to use phsychological warfare. He built his fortresses intelligently, with plenty of escape routes, he knew the mentality of his enemy precisely. Being held prisoner and tortured by them for so much of his youth might have helped this along.

He had taken control back over his OWN territory after it had become so splintered and unruly that it was a hazard. Ok, some of his methods to do this were, well, barbaric. However, think about the times he lived and ruled in.

Think of a guy who was able to, from a small, beaten down province of Wallacia, beat back the Ottoman Turks. I shall tell one tale:

One time he had been beaten back to Targoviste and the Ottoman Turks, en force, were going to plow him under. Tepes had about 30,000 men but the Turks had about 250,000 men.

There was nothing left. He had done everything he could... and he did the most extreme things imagineable to keep them away. Most of what he did was barbaric by today's standards. Regardless, he was going to be slaughtered and Targoviste taken.

The Turks made it to the outside of Targoviste only to be met with about 20,000 impaled Turkish bodies surrounding Targoviste. Tepes had emptied his dungeons of all the Turkish political prisoners and impaled them surrounding Targoviste.

The Turks ran home to mommy.

Tepes used his mind as well as his might. He used what he knew of the minds of his foes.

I am including my favorite site about Tepes. It is a long, long article but it explains how he started, how he was formed, his successes, his insanities, and his death.

One of my all time favorite is St. Joan Of Arc: Patroness of the soldiers of France.

*Protector of Heroic causes

Born 1412- Died 1431

During 1412 in a small French village of Domremy Jeanne D Arc was born. She was a gentle young girl who prayed very often and helped others. She was indeed very spiritual young girl and spent many hours in prayer. She also spent time helping others and those in need. Joan of Arc began to hear "voices" when she was about 13 years old. She believed that these voices carried messages from GOD to her by the time she was 17 years old, her belief was that GOD wanted her to find the true king of France and help him to claim his throne. This was during the times of the hundred years war. Joan was able to predict the happenings durning the war and identify the king when he was in disguise.
Joan became a leader during the hundered years war and led the army to victories carrying the banner that stated, "Jesus, Maria". During the battle for Compiegne. Joan was captured and was sold to the English who surrendered her to the Biship of Beauvis.

Joan was put on trial in Rouen and she was asked questions that caused her to give answers that proved to be against her will. She refused to retract the answers that expressed her beliefs, visions and voices. Joan was judged by her statements as a heretic and was condemned to death by being burned at the stake. Joan was later cleared of her crimes and was much later canonised in 1920.
