The Tollund man provides an example of what ancient Germanic peoples may have looked like. Discovered in a peat bog in Denmark in 1952, the Tollund man was dressed only in a pointed cap and belt. Tests later determined that the body was over 2000 years old.

From the 2nd century bc to the 5th century ad northern Germanic and Celtic tribes, constantly pressed by new migrations from the north and east, were in contact with the Romans, who controlled southern and western Europe. The writings of Romans Julius Caesar and Cornelius Tacitus describe these encounters and provide almost the only accounts of life among these so-called barbarian peoples. In general, the Romans denounced the Germans for heavy drinking, relentless fighting, and atrocities such as human sacrifice. But Romans also commended the virtue of Germanic women as well as the overall absence of any avarice among the tribes.

Tollund man's cap was actually a slave's cap. Slavery was practiced by the ancient Scandinavians and Vikings just as it was by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Among the Germanic tribes, slaves were often sacrificed to the earth goddess, Nertha, in bogs and the Roman historian, Tacitus (1st & 2nd centuries A.D.)comments on it also. One theory about Tollund man is that he was a Swede, captured by the Danes during one of their raids into Sweden, and broght back to Denmark as a slave.

The ancient Celts of Gaul and the British Isles seem to have conducted similar sacrifices of hapless victims, often slaves and prisoners of war, in their bogs too.
