Used to my ferrets would eat about a bowl of food in about two days, but now they eat a whole bowl in less than a day. Then I give them more and thats gone before I wake up. I mean they seem to be getting fatter and I was wandering if since they are getting older if that is normal for them to eat alot more or if they just want to be fat ferrets. Also how much food should a normal ferret eat each day?

Ferrets put on weight when they grow in their winter coat. Some only gain an ounce or two, others gain a pound or more.Ferrets are very good at regulating their food intake and you rarely ever see an obese ferret. If your ferrets are caged 24 hours a day and not getting enough exercise then they can get lazy and obese. If they are getting enough exercise then feed them when they are hungry. Ferrets also tend to eat at night.
I keep my ferrets food dishes full everyday all day long. One of my male ferrets weight goes from 2 1/2 pounds to 4 pounds when he grows in his winter coat. Another male goes from 3 1/2 to over 4 pounds. I have one female that goes from 2 pounds to 3 1/2 pounds in winter weight. Another girl that weighs 1 1/2 pounds and then only weighs 1 3/4 in the winter.

As ferrets mature from Kits to adult thier diet changes. A young kit may eat a bowl a week where many yearlings can eat a bowl a day. My ferrets all eat around a bowl a day. Many ferrets also will eat based on variation in temperature. If the ferret is getting cold, it will like most other wild mamals start packing on the winter weight. Also do not worry about you ferret getting fat, just keep the fuzzy on a steady diet. The only way your ferret will girth up is through too many treats. Hope this helps.

When you greet that sunny morning and find the ferrets thunder pound the floor while they walk and look like huge furry Weeble toys, that's the moment you come to realize......they've been eating WAY too much.

don't give them food evry time there bowl is empty, if they have already eaten an entire bowl that day. if you limit them to one bowl amount a day, they'll learn to eat wisely.
