I had a period right before I got pregnant. After that I didn't have one for nine months. When I had the baby my period was heavy and alot of bad cramps.

They were bad for about a day or two then I would get really mean migraines, which were worse than the cramps. I would rather have had cramps bor a whole week than the migraines I got for a day or two (sometimes 3.)

"period" cramps are like contractions during labor when you are dilated to 4-5, after that they get more intense and longer in duration. (I had some SERIOUS problems with period cramps during college. I went to college in Canada my first year, and one time I was taking "222s" - which had codeine - and they did nothing for the pain I was experiencing. After that I went on the pill to control my cycle - which helped tremendously.) I had an epidural during the delivery of my first child (in labor for 24 hours) but did it "natural" with the next two. It sure went faster the second and third time around. -- Whatever you decide with pain control DO NOT let them do an episiotomy!!! I had one the first birth and it took SO much LONGER to heal - and I was sore for a lot longer after the birth as well. My first was a big baby, 8 lbs. 12 oz. - 20 inches and they just got bigger after that; but I figured it was best for me and my babies to go the "natural" route. The after-effects of the epidural were horrible for me - but I realize everyone is different. (The second birth I had a nurse midwife, and it was the BEST delivery. There were some complications, but she took care of it, we delivered in a hospital so an M.D. was around if necessary.) I'm just so surprised at the numbers of women who refuse to try natural child birth any more...oh well.....

Before, I had mild cramps like I was getting my period but never menstruated-- to me they felt exactly the same, like normal.
