blocks certain websites and certain content based on your filter citeria. It is mostly used to block porn and viruses but it could theoretically be used to filter anything -- with varying success.
An example: Let's say you do not like the fruit apples and you don't want to see anything about apples when you do an internet search. A simple filter would stop you from seeing any web page that had the word "apple" in it. (but what about "manzana" the Spanish word for apple. or "pomme") A more complicated filter would look for round red objects and block them (but what about tomatoes? and clown noses....) And then you'd have to decide whether you wanted any references to Apple computers. And a really tight filter would probably block words like "Granny Smith, Gala, Fuji, Macintosh, Red Delicious, Braeburn, Spartan...." And still you might find yourself offended by some sly presentation of an apple that got around the filtering criteria....
