A live oak is an evergreen American oak and there are more than one kind of live oak. With around 30 different kind of oak trees and live oak being just one of them, it's hard to tell sometimes. Usually you can tell either by the bark or the leaves what kind of oak it is. I also live in the South and oaks are the most common trees around so it's hard to tell one type of oak from another.

A live oak does not lose its leaves in the fall like a "regular" oak tree. Also live oaks grow only in warm climates -- that's why you see them in Savannah, New Orleans, etc. They are rare in the upper South and nonexistent in the North. But, of course, global warming will change that and in 10 years, they'll probably grow in Maine. :-(

I "think" it might just be the way different people refer to them. Like someone might say interstate and others say highway:) That's the best I can come up with! Good Luck!
