Honesty is a very gray term.

I think a good general rule of thumb is:

Exaggerate to a point where it's still more true than it is false, omission is God's gift to jobhunters, but never never lie.

Lying will get you nowhere. Recruiters tend to be able to smell bullshit, and reprocussions might not necessarily be immediate. It's just not worth it.

Think of interviewing more from a marketing standpoint, and less from a moral one. You'll probably run into less trouble that way.

I think you're confusing honesty and frankness, or directness. You should be absolutely honest. However, honesty does not require you to tell everything you know. If you're asked a question, answer it honestly and as completely as possible, but do not go on and on, and do not say inappropriate things.

It's not a matter of how much honesty is "allowed" in a job interview. It's a matter of telling the truth. But you should tell the truth with kindness and empathy, toward others and yourself.

You should answer honestly to all legit questions asked from an interviewer. Be careful in lying in an interview. You never know when a lie will come back to haunt you during a job.

Also, watch out for inappropriate questions. Daft One's interviewer asked very inappropriate questions (of which the interviewer could get sued over). I recommend Daft One (and anyone who has had a similar problem) to look at my sources below for more information.

Well, one time I was in a job interview and the person interviewing me was asking me if I had a boyfriend and asking me if and when I was getting married , etc, etc.. I answered all the questions honestly, and i DID NOT get the job!

I think that was TOO PERSONAL for an interview. And I should not have been honest with my answers!

Cheers.

Well I definitely would not recommend being dishonest, but sometimes there is such a thing as too much information. For example, if they ask you why you are leaving your current position, do not go into detail about how much you hate your boss.

Not good to lie, just be creative and make sure you don't say anything negative. It is ok to hide the truth, just don't make stuff up. Like what politicians do.
