If you're on a tight budget you're going to have to do what I do and that's "research". Las Vegas is a whole other animal when it comes to room rates, the same room that goes for $49 one week might be $300-$400 the next. No that's no exaggeration, I have actually seen much-much-much greater difference than that in the room price of the same hotel($15 one week to over $300 the next).

To keep your room cost down, you absolutely must, avoid special events, large conventions and weekends. I have always found that I can save money by booking my rooms and air separate. But, I have to admit, I'm willing to work at it and do the research to save big bucks.

These are some sites to check room rates
http://www.travelworm.com >usually the best rates

http://www.tripres.com

best all around source of LV info

I found very good rates for May 28th for 4 nights($35>on travelworm) at the Orleans - is two miles off the strip down Tropicana, but they have a free shuttle to the center of the strip that runs about every 20 minutes.IMHO the Orleans is the best "value" hotel casino in Las Vegas, very nice over sized rooms. It's a "small" hotel by LV standards, only about 1900 rooms. They do have a lot to do, on property, movies, bowling, swimming, arcade etc. Their lunch buffet is one of my favorites and a real bargain at $8, the courtyard cafe also has some great bargains with their "graveyard" specials. Orleans will also give you a couple of "funbooks" when you check in, they have some nice coupons in them.

For an awesome view of the strip from your room at the Orleans, when you check in ask for a room on the 15th-19th floors rooms # 02-44(even #'s) > a room such as 1638 or 1724 will have an incredible view...

A few very nice hotels with good rates for 5/28 to 6/1
Luxor - $80
Bally's - $79
Flamingo - $85
Barbary Coast - $70
Stratosphere - $40
These rates were found on travelworm > 2/4

The best time to go to LV for great room rates is from the 9th of December up until the 28th. There are no events or large conventions during this period of time and the hotels scramble to fill rooms. You can even find bargains at 4 & 5 star hotels then, "even" on the weekends(shocker).

Coast casinos(Orleans, Gold Coast & Barbary Coast will price match any of the online sites room rates for their hotel) - Harrah's group of hotels will also price match, and even beat that advertised price by 25%, but they don't make it easy(shame). The Harrah's group of hotels includes, Bally's, Paris, Flamingo, Harrah's, Caesars etc http://www.harrahs.com

If you just have to stay on the strip, I would recommend two hotels that are "generally" the best value. Barbary Coast, which is an older, but very nice hotel that sits right in the center of the strip, and the Stratosphere which anchors the North end of the Strip.

If you travel light > one carry on bag apiece and one small bag you can save a considerable amount of money by riding the CAT(bus). The #108 Paradise and #109 Maryland Parkway bus both stop at McCarran, about every 5 minutes. The bus can actually get you to your destination quicker some times than a cab, I have waited in line for an hour for a cab from the airport and I have heard of people waiting more than two during conventions/events. And, the shuttles can be even worse, you have to wait for one that's going to "your" group of hotels, then, you may be the last stop in that group.

I take the bus everywhere $1.25 one way, ask for a transfer and the driver will give you a 24 hour pass for $2.50. If you ride the Deuce(strip bus) the driver is going to ask you for another .50c and issue you another pass. The CAT bus will take you anywhere in the valley you want to go, it's a great system. http://www.rtcsnv.com.

When I stay at Orleans, which is quite a bit, I try to catch the #108 bus(ask for the transfer) tell the driver you want to get off at Tropicana. Catch the #201 West bound Tropicana bus, this one will stop right in front of the Orleans. You can take the #109 Maryland Pky bus from the AP also, just make sure it's the North bound bus, the South bound is headed for the SSTT.

You catch the bus at McCarran by walking towards the baggage claim area, just before you get there, on your right is an escalator, the sign over it reads "ground transportation, level 0". Take the escalator down, go out the doors in front of you and look to your right, that's the bus stop.

There are also quite a few free shuttles provided by the hotels, for a list of them check the Las Vegas Advisor site.

Always sign up for and use slot club cards, even if you don't think you play enough!! Just signing up at some places will lead to marketing/promotion offers(I do not suggest to anyone that they run around and sign up for a bunch of slot club cards. It would be a waste of time, unless they are giving you someting to sign up. who knows the next time you're in LV they might be offering something very nice to first time sign ups and you blew it)> If you do happen to choose the Orleans, sign up for separate accounts, this will double the offers you receive from marketing. No, this would not be the advice I would give to everyone in every circumstance.

Circus Circus has nice reasonable rooms.
Go to their hotel site directly so there is no markups.
I think I paid close to $39 a night.
If you stay on the strip, you won't need a car at all.

Southwest has great deals on Vegas flights all the time.
As long as you book at least 14 days in advance.

Be safe and have fun without the kids!!!!

If you are on a tight budget then consider staying downtown. Because its off the strip its a lot cheaper and its still very touristy. My parents love the Golden Nugget its a nice hotel and very resonable.

Try looking at the flight plus hotel option on expedia. You can get some good deals. It may be better to fly to Vegas indirectly as this tends to be the cheaper option if you dont mind all the extra flying.

I've been to Vegas twice and both trips were fun. If you are taking your kids, stay at Circus Circus. I was there to see the hotel, but didnt stay there, but its geared towards kids. Take them down to the Freemont Experience (downtown) and they will love it there.

Last May I used expedia.com and found a great deal on flights and hotel for $450. That was for 2 people. We stayed at the MGM Grand Hotel and it was the far best hotel I've ever stayed at. There is plenty to do in Vegas. Get your walking shoes on and enjoy!!

Well, all of the hotels you have chosen are reasonably close to eachother and are at the south end of the strip, perhaps that is why you chose them. MGM Grand is one of my favorite hotels, I absolutely love that hotel. The rooms were amazing and comfortable, and most importantly (to me) the rooms didn't smell like smoke. The pool is amazing, the restaurants are great. I have never really seen any celebrities there except for Kurt Thomas and I assuming he was in Vegas because he was traded the day before :) It is the the last stop on the monorail on the south end and quickly connects you to the rest of the strip. New York New York has an amazing casino. I love everything about the ground floor. I have heard the rooms tend to be smaller at this hotel. Mandalay Bay is amazing. One of the Southern most strip hotels with mini monorail connecting to Luxor and Excalibur. The hotel in its entirety is amazing. Good pool. Luxor gives me vertigo, I will probably never stay there. But the clubs are good. LAX is popular for celebrity sitings. You may even see Carrot Top on any given day! : ) My pick: MGM grand!

I can't recommend any sites for hotels etc... but having been to Vegas, I can tell you your kids will absolutely love Circus Circus. It is a great family oriented theme hotel you can visit while you are there, even if you can't afford to stay there.

Dont waste your money on renting a car. Vegas is mainly walking. A car would be a waste

WHY do people think Vegas is a place for FAMILY ? It is NOT. If you want a FAMILY vacation take them somewhere with something for the WHOLE FAMILY. VEGAS is NO PLACE FOR KIDS !!!
