you have to use dvdshrink. It's actually an outdated program but it works so well I still use it. It will let you open a dvd (or dvd files from video_ts folder) and it's a 1 step burn button from there. dvdshrink actually relies on the nero burning engine to write the disc so it's a good idea to have that installed. It also supports compressing a dual layer disc to fit on a 4.7, as well as removing specific files that you don't want to include in the copied disc ( director commentary, movie previews, behind the scenes stuff).
For newer releases, with newer encryptions, I use dvdfab decrypter or dvdfab platinum version. This program has full copying / burning capability to it but every so often it gets a little buggy with the burning side of things. I primarily use it to rip the vobs and then load them up into dvdshrink.
The dvdfab program has a trial version available but you can find registration hacks on any decent p2p network. They do release updates fairly frequently to keep up with the newer encryptions so it's a decent app for ripping.

check the following:
1) are you able to copy other dvds?
if not, it could be that the software you are using is old and does not support DVD copying
2) is this a game DVD?
if it is and you are trying to make a backup of it, you might want to try using (alcohol DVD burning software) << use this as a string to search for it in the internet and you can buy it if you like it.
3) is this a copyrighted DVD?
some DVDs are copyrighted and cannot be copied.
4) is it DL and the DVDR you are using SL
your DVD writer might be able to burn single layer DVDs but not Double layer DVDs. you might also be using a single layer DVD to copy a double layer DVD.
5) is the lens might just be dirty
use dvd cleaning kit to be sure.
