To protect their noses. Rip Hamilton has had his nose broken so many times that his now feels comfortable wearing it even though his nose is not currently broken. Some wear it while they heal, some wear it for protection.

Most start wearing one after a facial injury. I have actually heard that some just get used to wearing one and feel like keeping it on all the time when playing.

This would also help prevent repeat injuries to the same location.
