The main difficulty at the time was size and power of the rocket necessary to send a capsule to the moon in the 60s and 70s. We had the Saturn V rocket, which proved itself on the job, they had the Energia, which was also extremely powerful, but failed too many times blowing up at the launching pad. So, they abandoned plans to land man on the moon, especially after we had already beaten them to it. Instead, they redirected their focus to something which they thought was more practical, the establishment of a manned space station in orbit, Mir. It was decomissioned and brought down from orbit in 2001.
It's going to be a while before anybody will have a rocket large enough to send man back to the moon again. Those were huge beasts. We have real annoying morons today that say that all of that was just Hollywood stutf, "none of it was real anyway". They've obviously never SEEN one of those Saturn V rockets take off! Let's see Hollywood try to fake THAT in real life!

The Russian moon program failed. They had a very large rocket the N-1 that failed on every attempt to launch it. The first stage had I believe 32 small engines as apposed to the Saturn V which had five. The failure of the Soviet rocket scientists to develop a very large thrust engine like America doomed them to failure. They had developed a lunar lander designed for one man. When the rocket continued to fail the whole program was shut down. Then the Soviet leaders claimed they had never been in a race to put a man on the moon.

Maybe cause America never made it to the moon either and all the moon landing footage we see is a hoax.
The Russians might have known that travel to the moon was impossible and didn't waste their time or money in trying to achieve something which was not able to be achieved at that time,
