In my opinion:

Jazz- the 50's. The best jazz is from the 40's and earlier. Today the media will have you believe jazz is boring and lame, but as far as retro jazz goes, it couldn't have been further than the truth- those cats were hep and happenin'. Coolest. music. ever.

R&B- The 70's. Best R&B is from the 50's and 60's, with the exception of Marvin Gaye whose career extended into the 80's.

Blues/country- the best is older, but there's still some good stuff out today. I can't really decide a specific decade when it jumped the shark.

Reggae- Whenever dancehall killed real reggae.

Rock- the 80's. Rock was in its prime 50's-70's. How in the hell could lameass junk like Fallout Boy be classified in the same genre as Chuck and Jimi? As far as newer rock goes I like U2 and that's about it.

Rap- The 90's. Now don't get me wrong- I love Sugarhill Gang and Run DMC but modern rap is just a degenerate minstrel show. It has no soul, and if it has no soul, it's not music.

Even though I disagree with you on the MJ thing, it's still a good question. Music has gotten stranger, in some forms, all the time. I'd say it jumped the shark at the beginning of rap music.

i agree with you

the newest band i like is green day though but i like their old stuff (kerplunk!, 39/smooth) but then rap and stuff isnt music at all, there is no feeling or soul in it AT ALL, its all "im so hawt! im sexy oooooh!!" and then i was never really a raggae fan and I agree with the R&B thing, and im not really a country/ blues fan

i've liked jazz since i was a little girl becuse my grandpa was a jazz musician in the 60's-the late 70's, but he died in '82, 4 years after i was born, and my dad inherited his instruments and stuff so now im beginning to paly jazz, so jazz and rock are my biggest parts of life, but you're right, todays rock SUCKS, i mean, listen to "Panic! At the Disco" and all of today's "Death Metal" is sucks...music is just going down the drain all together, because it's no longer about the music, its about the money, fame, and fortune, and i hate it. and then this crap that people call "music" isnt really music, its really fast talking about stupid things that dont even matter in today's society

i mean there are those rare songs of today that are actually good, but there arent that many

i really could go on and on, but hey...im not gonna waste your time.

I have been making this argument for years!! The answer is the all mighty dollar! That is why everything out now sounds the same because it has a specific ingredient that is safe for record labels. The reason is from the early 90's scare of lo-fi grunge rock almost putting the major labels out of business. They must be safe, but you know what? SAFE IS SORRY!!!
