is it possible to breed a male fighting fish with another kind of female fish?

You can only breed animals of the same species together. The chromosomes won't match up otherwise.

If you are asking if you can breed betas, then yes, you can breed a male and a female beta. From what I hear, it can be slightly difficult but with some experience, you can do it. You have to separate them after you breed them because they can fight and kill each other. Betas are very territorial fish.

Its possible that bettas and gouramis could hybridize, since they are in the same family, but you'd have to do so in a labratory by hand since the fish won't breed with each other by choice.

It would have to be another splendin species I bet. Best bet genetically would probably be a dwarf gourami. But they're ugly & he wouldn't be attacted to her.
