Practice. In the comfort and privacy of your own home, imagine scenarios where you might be confronted by people in any range of emotion... you might even want to write possible scenes down, if you enjoy writing. Like writing a short play or dialog. Use your imagination, while at the same time keeping it realistic. (Do you have trouble coming up with witty things to say when the mood is light and you're goofing with friends?)
Recall all of the times you've found yourself feeling like a frozen chicken.. remember all the snappy comebacks you thought of later, when the moment had gone. (again, i say write it down, because writing is kind of instinct with me..)
Replay the scenes in your mind, if you're just imaginging, or read the scenes if you're writing stuff down. Practice out loud, so you practice your tone of voice, inflection, etc.
You may want to enlist the help of a friend or your boyfriend, and do some role playing. Some people might suggest therapy or some sort of self confidence boosting seminar.. (although I don't.) Might help. Might not.

I think most people had this happen to them at one point in their lives. I dont know if practicing will help because you might try to start it with the WRONG person and then you well get your a.s.s whupped. I think when it is the right time and with a person in PASSING, not someone who looks over eager to do something to you; dont think of the person, but think of what is being said. If it warrants a good cuss out, and you dont feel scared but only anger just do it. If it doesnt, just let the idiot pass.
You dont have to feel like a punk because you didnt respond sweetheart, more than likely someone will beat their a.s.s ..thats how life goes, its called KARMA
Good Luck!

It will come with experience. After awhile, events repeat themselves if you haven't learned to avoid them. This is especially true of encounters with ignorant people. Soon all of those witty comments you thought of after the fact will come in handy again. Just relax, when the situations don't shock you anymore you will be able to think clearer.

Sometimes silence can be truly golden, especially if you're confronted with people who are bent on making things really ugly.
