First off, the Renaissance and the Medieval era were two seperate eras -- the former, considered the beginning of the modern era, followed the latter.

Secondly, in response to your question, the (Catholic) Church was the center of social, political, and even economic life. It had tremendous influence over monarchies as well, performing the coronations in a way to signify the monarchy's submission to Church authority from Rome (in several countries, anyway; in Greek Orthodox lands the Church's leader was the Byzantine Emperor until 1453).

A good place to see the connection between the Church and Medieval times is the Spanish Inqusition. It was the attempt of the Spanish Monarchy, along with the Catholic church, to expel Jews, repress Protestants, weaken local political opposition to the Catholic Monarchs, and even like the Nazis in WWII, gain from the economic benefits of the confiscated property. Sad to say, for a church that professed its "tolerance", they were anything but.

Medieval ages..
Well, there were the crusades. Religious trips that men, women and children took to 'the holy land.'
Afterwards, the trust in the Catholic Church decreased, I believe.

I'll go look for some information, just in case I'm completely wrong...
