The world has to support them to prevent another Holocaust that some people like the Iranian president Ahmadinejad and other radical Islamists like the people of Hamas and Hisbollah would like to happen.
I don't think that the Holocaust should give them a "free pass" to do whatever they want to do, but when I hear the statements of radical Islamists and their actions that have no other aim but to kill civilians it makes me side with Israel. There are also many of Israeli actions that I don't agree with, but when I hear the hatred from the other side I notice that to a large part it has nothing to do with Israel's actions and is just plain Jew-hatred, for example when they say that Jews killed the prophets or say that Jews would cause trouble wherever they are and blame the Jews for the persecution they experienced for centuries in Europe and even for the Holocaust, I can just say that Israelis get treated very unfairly in this situation just for being Jewish. I'm German and it has happened to me that an Egyptian said to me: "You killed your Jews, why don't you allow us to kill ours?" and expected me to understand his wish for a second Holocaust and insisted that certainly Jews must have caused terrible problems for Germany that made Nazis kill them. I know that this is also the way of thinking of Islamic hate preachers. It is in the charta of Hamas that every Muslim who wants to make peace with Israel is a traitor and will go to hell. So, when I see that Jews are again confronted with this type of irrational and murderous hatred, this makes me side with them.
And tootsie is wrong. It is right that not only Jews were killed by the Nazis, but there were six million Jews killed, the total number of victims of the Nazi regime is much higher.
I am not sure about the figure elden w gives because not all Jewish Holocaust victims were gassed. More than a million were shot and many died from hunger and diseases in the concentration camps. I don't know the exact numbers about the killing methods, but it is certain that the total number of Jewish Holocaust victims is around six millions.
Regarding elden w I'd also like to mention that WW2 wasn't fought primarily for the Jews, Germany had declared war to the US and was generally a big threat to the world at that time. The whole world including Germany has to be grateful to America for its role in WW2, because it is really true that Jews were not the only victims of Nazi Germany and not the only ones who were declared as "inferior race".

First of all not all of the 6 million to die in the Holocaust were Jewish. They were also, Gypsies, Communists, Homosexuals, the mentally retarded and the socially unfit(those who spoke out against these horrors). It certainly seems that Israel has a "free pass" to do whatever it wants. An Arab I knew said back in the 80's
that the reason why the United States is so hated in the middle east is because we back Israel. At the time I thought he was oversimplyfing but now I'm not so sure.

My father landed at Normandy France in 1944, in the third wave of soldiers (the first two were wiped out by the Germans). By the time he was in combat for thirty days his company was 80% casualties. He went through five major battles. By the time he reached Berlin (ten months later), he was the only one left in his company still able to fight. Then the war ended and he came home to make a family. He received a purple heart for shrapnel wounds and a bronze star. I'd say he did his part to help the Jewish people. If any of them appreciated it, they certainly didn't find a way to show it. He passed away in Aug. 2006. I now work for a company owned by a group of Jews in New York City and we are underpaid, overworked and not treated very humanely. You ask if the world owes Israel anything. They'd better not expect much from me.
I hope this gives you a better perspective and answers your question.
p.s. I heard or read somewhere that only about 3 million of those gassed were jewish. I don't know the exact figure.
p.p.s. I read the bible once cover to cover and I don't recall any reference to a chosen people. Perhaps it's wishful thinking.
p.p.p.s. I don't hate them and I believe they have a right to exist. I just wish they would do a better job of it.

Absolutely not.
What happened to the jews was horrible but it also happened to the gypsies, homosexuals, communists and social democrats. The jews were merely the most numerous and vociferous of the victims. It also happened to the Armenians in WW1 under the Turks.
It doesn't give the jews the right to massacre other people and steal their land, which is how they obtained the State of Israel.

Does the world HAVE an obligation to the State of Israel? No, it has an obligation to remember the Jewish people who died, and the complicity of the individuals, including the Catholic church, who were involved with the Nazis in the extermination of Anti-Fascists, Communists, Gypsies, Homosexuals, Russian P.O.Ws, and others.

I don't think Israel is asking people to "side" with them due to the Holocaust. People should side with Israel because they are the only free and civilized country in the Middle East. Israel remembers the Holocaust, out of respect for the dead, and to let history remember the horrors of Nazi Germany.
To side with Israel is the right thing to do. They're not asking for it, but it should be given to them.

Well, I'm a non-practicing hereditary Jew and I do NOT side with Israel right now.
Their use of white phosphorus is criminal and horrific, and any country that uses such weaponry against innocent citizens is unworthy of my support.
What happened in WWII was terrible, and echoes centuries of anti-Semitism; it is NOT an excuse for Israel to behave in the atrocious maner they have.

No, but I think Israel needs an ally to prevent a second Holocaust (ie. the destruction of Israel)
Iran is hell-bent on nuking Israel and I personally would not like to just sit by and watch that happen.

No. While the treatment of the Jews was terrible, I don't see
that we are obligated to treat them better than anyone else
because of it - if that's what you mean. That devalues the
lives of others who died during WWII, regardless of their
race, religion and nationality.

I remember an Arab once said to me, "Any time the Israelis do something particularly terrible, your TV runs a feature on the Holocaust."
