An empty treasury, discontent in the emerging middle class and in the Third Estate (the section of society other than aristocrats and clergy -- basically everyone but those two groups and the royal family), economic crises (such as failed crops in 1788) and the spreading of liberal ideas from England and the recent American Revolution.

One factor in the French Revolution was the desire of the French people to gain power over the Catholic church, and establish true "Equality, Fraternity. and Liberty" - something which the Catholic church had always denied its followers.
