Is it okay to get a cheap OBD II reader ? I'm looking for one around 40 dollar instead of 100 or 400. Any recommendation ?

Many shops will pull a code for cheap or free.

Remember when you pay a shop for diagnostic time you are paying for the use of a real tool. And the knowledge that code description don't mean part failure.
I have seen many cars that Joe somebody scanned with his 40 dollar tool and put a few hundred dollars in parts on to avoid paying someone that knew what they were doing.

Well you can get them from auto-zone but 40 bucks, well you get what you pay for.
It won't do much for 40 bucks but maby give you the code. With out knowing what the code means you are just shooting in the dark
There are good ones out there but 40 forget it

you get what you pay for, if you go too cheap you may end up spending more buying parts you dont need, for occasional diagnosis it is cheaper to have a shop diagnose it for you, also some parts stores will do it for free, if it is for professional use spend the money and buy a snap-on modis which will do most cars and trucks, but you will spend about $10,000 for everything

Most auto parts stores sell them. Ask the clerk about various features.
