Okay, from my experience as your common freak parent who wants to breath down their child's neck every time they're unconcious: bassinets RULE. It all depends on your sis's preferences. If she wants the kiddo next to her all night so she can be there and stare at it and check it constantly (often times waking up in cold sweats because it hasn't made a peep in, oh say, 5 minutes) then she'll definitely want a bassinet. If she wants to put it in another room during the night, and she wants something it can sleep in near her during the day: a playpen would be good. The bassinet I had was from Wal Mart, it was a portable bassinet that came with a pink ribbon and a blue ribbon. It was kinda generic-ish, but it worked. I mean, heck, it'll be in the closet in about 6 weeks or less anyways. I saw one at K-mart that looked pretty awesome. It rocked side to side and had a mobile. The thing about em is, though, that (for mine) the padding...cushion thing wasn't firm and babies need a firm surface to sleep on. It helps prevents SIDs and makes it easier for them to roll over on their sides. SO! Whatever you end up getting, make sure the mattress...or whatever it is on the inside...is good and firm ^_^
Tell your sis "congrats" for me!!!

As almost everyone has said, bassinets are only useful for a few weeks. A better gift would be a playpen which also has the bassinet feature. Here's a link: http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?cat=Gear&pid=04988141000&vertical=BABY&subcat=Playards&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes
This is at Sears, currently 54.99 on sale. For some reason the picture is not appearing, so click on the enlarge picture button and you will see that its pale blue.
Your sister can use the bassinet feature, and since the playpen is on wheels, she can move it from room to room easily. Just check the width of the doorways in her house/apartment to be sure the playpen will fit through easily. The added bonus is that as the baby grows, she can use the play pen too.

Well this is just from my *personal* experience, but the bassinet I was given as a gift was rather large and not at all easy to move from room to room. If you do go with one, make sure you see it assembled at the store first, so you are getting what you want.
For my second baby, I got rid of the bassinet altogether and bought myself a Moses Basket. It's smaller and can be easily moved from room to room. Plus, they are too cute! Anyway, that's something to consider if you can't find a bassinet that you like. Good luck!

Personally, I thought that the bassinet that I had purchased was a waste. They are not designed to hold the baby for more than a few weeks. Once the baby starts to really kick / move / roll, they are no longer safe. A beautiful toddler bed (will fit the mattress of the crib) is a better purchase, if she has the room.
Bassinet - where
lower price ranges Walmart, Kmart, Target (still beautiful)
step up - JcPenney, Sears, Baby USA, Marshall Fields
High end - Specialty baby sites on web (they are everywhere)

How about a Moses Basket instead of a bassinet. You can carry your sleeping child from room to room with the Moses Basket. They are also great for hotel stays (when baby is still really little) and great for just going someplace to visit!
I had one with my youngest daughter....and it was great. I would put her in the basket after feeding her....and then take her in the next room and let her doze while I watched TV, visited with my family, etc.
They take bassinet sheets, usually. There are MANY options when buying them, too. Now that my baby daughter is almost one....we use the basket as a stuffed animal holder (toy bin). It's beautiful in their room and I look forward to telling her one day that she used to sleep in that basket when she was an itty bitty thing. For me that was the best item I got when she was born!!
I put some websites below:

Bassinets are great, adorable and handy, but they don't last very long. Babies outgrow them so quickly. A bassinet is a wonderful and thoughtful gift, if she has it on her "wants" list for her baby then by all means purchase one for her. Though I would recommend you get some little side gifts that come in handy in a pinch like newborn diapers, wipes, desitin....etc. Things that she will use daily and a lot of.

I had one with rollers and I could wheel him to whatever room I was in so I could keep and Eye on him while he slept and it was right beside my bed when I would sleep I LOVED it, It is a very good gift!

Nothing. Some doctors even say not to use a blanket, just make sure your baby is dressed warmly enough. I didn't give my daughter a blanket or toy until she started going to sleep by herself at 9 months and even then only a small doll and a thin receiving blanket.

If you're in America try Toys R Us or Babys R Us. You can also go to Target.
