Hi there...cats learn to recognize patterns in tone inflections and in our body language in order to understand what we are saying.

My cat acts more like a dog than a cat. he plays fetch, drinks out of the toilet and knows his name. He comes running if you call his name. He knows go away and get down. He also knows when you are talking to him becuase he will "talk back"

My two cats definitely understand things, especially keys words like eat, hungry, and mousey (as in toy mouse). Cats are quite smart, I think!

Rarely. But they do understand body language and tone of voice, and they can pick up a lot about your mood from those cues.

Of course they do! My cat and I discuss philosophy, science and the meaning of life all the time. Of course, I do most of the talking but he blinks in all the significant places...

I believe that they understand the tone of our voice and our loving gestures toward them.

I think they understand some words and phrases. They understand their names, whatever you tell them when you're feeding them, treats, and lovey-dovey stuff, etc.

The rest of the time, I think they read the tone of your voice.

no. but u can try to understand and speak ur cats language... body language; hiss scream meow purr(thts hard) the whole thing. she probaly cant figure out your body language, but u can understand hers, and thts good

They get used to certain words and relate that to the actions you take, but it is also the tone of your voice and how you say it.

They seem to understand kicking and slapping pretty well. Sometimes biting gets some pretty good results. Never tried talking to them.
