If it is made by a manufacturer that follows the VIN system then you will need to read the 10th digit of the serial number to be sure. The letter will let you know what year it is, here is a chart of values http://www.cyclechaos.com/wiki/Image:Suzuki-Year-Model-Designations.jpg All the Japanese manufacturers were on this same system by 1976. (For bikes shipped to the us).

it could be either, but most likely it is a 1980, you need to decode the vin number to be sure
