Men and women both lose hair when the follicle becomes to thin. Hair follicles thin when testosterone hormone levels drop. Men have high levels of testosterone when they are young, and this level decreases over time. Women also have testosterone in their blood, but at a much lower level than men. They have a much smaller decrease in testosterone as they get older and therefore lose their hair at a slower rate.
Some people are going to say that genetics causes people to lose their hair. This is true, but the actual genetic signal being passed down is the change in testosterone levels.

Testosterone is definitely involved, and it combines with a substance present in some men to do in the hair follicles. The trait is transmitted by the x chromosome, so I, like my mother's father, went bald at an early age.

Chicks DO go bald! They just have more at their disposal to cover it. It's mostly genetic but hormones are a culprit as well which is why many women have thinning hair as they age and estrogen levels go down.

baldness is tranfered by X chromosome. it can be from mother or father. in women the presence of baldness gene on both X chromosomes shows the dominance if on one it may remain hidden and may get transfered to her son (50% chance). whereas men have one x chromosome and the presence of this gene on single X causes baldness plus higher testosterone levels of are also a cause of baldsness in men.

Anyway all future men will be bald.
