A yard is three feet, so a square yard is nine square feet. Thus, you need at least 323/9 square yards of carpet, if it can be done without waste. But carpet does not come in 17 foot width, so some piecing will be needed, and there will be some waste.

I'm assuming that's an equals sign in your equation, so the answer is that you need to lay down (323sq. ft.)/(9 sq.ft. per sq.yd.) equals 35.89 yards of carpet. Due to standard widths and pattern matching, you will need to buy more carpet than this . Reference shows how to calculate.
