he's a flawed (many would differ) protagonist who has become lost in what he perceives as a phoney world. You don't get any ultimate answers as to what happens to him...you just get the feeling that he's going to start a new life and find his own way in life in contrast to the prep school, businessman way of life he was brought up on.

Have you ever heard of the "Everyman" figure in literature? Well, Holden is the "Every young person" in literature. He is the consummate intelligent young person.
