he's a flawed (many would differ) protagonist who has become lost in what he perceives as a phoney world. You don't get any ultimate answers as to what happens to him...you just get the feeling that he's going to start a new life and find his own way in life in contrast to the prep school, businessman way of life he was brought up on.
