Just to warn you, the guy who said a snake can go for a year without eating apparently has been sitting at the computer for too long. Some snakes might be able to go that long, but most would not just be unhealthy, but dead. Which I guess is the most extreme form of being unhealthy... Your snake is doing what a snake does. It isn't uncommon for them to miss a feeding now and then, but if it goes for more than a month, you need to start to be a little concerned. One major thing to watch for is if it starts to lose weight, that is a sure sign of problems. a little more info might help...What type of snake, what are you feeding, conditions of the cage come into play, does it have a hide to go and feel secure, how old is it...All those things make a difference between snakes and their actions. As far as him trying to escape, that could be common for him, some do that after awhile. Also, does your snake need to burmate (hibernate, depending on the type of snake). More information could help.
As far as the locks, they make screen tops that can have a hook on each side that securely keeps the top and and prevents esacapes. They are relatively inexpensive at your pet store.

First of all it is hard to contain nature! Yes they want out ,, take um out often to full-fill this urge.. it helps! Plus you should handle your snake often anyway to have a nice pet! Don't worry about the meal snakes can go near a year without a meal ,, of course not healthy,, but they can adapt,, they have been around for ever and time proves that! Once you do find him make sure his cage is warm,, provide area for him to soak.., put better lid ,, or weight on lid to prevent more escapes,, many new snake owners worry about feeding too much,, only worry if he never eats,, don''t over feed! or power feed! I suggest a true snake cage one that opens from the side as opposed to the top like a fish tank! better locking plus better for the pet owner to pick up there pet,, snakes don't like hands coming down on them! .. as for keeping em in the cage its all on the locks or latches don't think a screen top will do! If you really want to learn check for local reptile clubs in your area,, ! Hope this helps! Shawn

well most snake like to be out of their tanks to just looking around or needed a bigger place to shed it skin . any way you go to the petsmart and get new tank with a wire door for the top with that has a lock on it . well maybe he s hungery and hadnt ate anything so far . if you want to keep youre snake safe then i would just put a flat wood over the top of the tank so he wont run out again .

okay first of are you 100% sure its not buried itself some where in the tank? 40 gallon is pretty big for a baby snake to get out of unless you had a log or something leaning close to the top of the lid. mine like to hide for days under hte bedding one is 5 ft long and sometimes i have to look hard for a feww mins to locate him in his tank thats how well he can hide himself LOL . for the lid try drilling 4 holes one in each corner of the plastic or metal framm then get a screw put threw hole on undersid use a plastic ovel shaped nut then when you put the lid on just turn the screw until the nut catches the plastic lip of the tank rim.
