My baby is 2 weeks old. I ask different people I know. One person who is a nurse said its ok, just not to give them a lot of water, but my boyfriend's family say's not to give my baby water. What should I do?

Your baby is way too young to have water. All he/she needs at this point is breast milk or formula, unless otherwise directed by your physician, and even then, I would get a second opinion.

NO Water for newborns. Back when my kids were little, they said give them water in addition to their formula/breast milk (my oldest is 32 now). Times have changed, they have found babies do NOT need additional water.

Your confusion probably stems from asking women of different generations and getting the information they used way back when.

If your baby is making a pee diaper at least 6 times a day, you know that she/he is getting plenty of fluids. If not, then you need to call the doctor for advice!!

go with your own instincts. if you think about what we are all made up of. 80% of us are water. the baby won't get hurt by drinking water. but make sure that it does have other fluids too. maybe a 4 oz bottle a day to start. see how it takes it. some babies won't drink water so you can put a little bit of sugar in it.
it is good to have the baby drink water, but I would give it spring water or water that has been filtered. and if it does drink too much water, you may find that it will get air more easily and you need to make sure that you burp the baby afterwards. but water is a good thing, not bad.. and just to note....you can drown by drinking too much water..

How about ask your pediatrician and see what they say? Since you are not sure. I personally would not do it in fear that the baby could choke on it since it is thin. Formula and breast milk are much more thicker and easier for baby to swallow. I would wait on giving them water til they were at least a month and still just a swallow of it. Good luck.

It isn't necessary to give your newborn water. Most babies get enough fluids from breast milk or infant formula.Because a newborn's kidneys are immature, she has a difficult time concentrating her urine, and if given too much plain water, may have trouble excreting it. This could lead to dangerous changes in the concentrations of sodium and potassium in her bloodstream. For these reasons, infants should not be given extra fluids unless their pediatrician recommends it.

Babies shouldn't drink water, shouldn't need too either. There is more than enough in your milk, and formula. The only time it is an OK thing is if it is really hot out, but it is not necessary.

Water is fine just not in large amounts...My daughter is 1 month old...and got a cold from my son...and I've been given her no more than 4 oz of water a day... to help flush out the cold and keep a fever down or away...

they don't recommend water until they are older like around 5-7 mos because they get their water from the breastmilk or from the formula. so they don't need straight up water yet. that nurse must not be a nurse in a pediatrician's office.. she don't know. if in doubt. always ask your pediatrician.

Newborns don't need any water. They need only breastmilk or formula. Giving a baby water can actually be harmful to them. It can interfere with how well they take in the nutrients in breastmilk and formula. Babies don't even need water until after their first bday.
