Our joint account has 609 bucks in it, and my checking has 7 cents in it. My husband is in the military and doesn't make much and I work at JCPenney and make less than he does. How am I supposed to afford to get an attorney, move all my and my daughter's things to the town where my family lives, and pay for a down payment and first month rent for an apartment? Before you ask, yes, I am 100% sure I will have custody of my daughter. He doesn't want anything to do with her. No, I can't stay with anyone in my family or friends until I get on my feet. They don't have the room or the money to house a woman and her baby. I need some suggestions. Please help a scared lonely woman?

By the way, yes, I am sure I want a divorce. The nasty details:
he is an abusive cheater and I wish I had left sooner. I am a fool, but now I wish to correct my dumb-*** ways and make my life better.

ok I'll skip the are you sure part. You can go to wal-mart or book store or something like that a buy a packet, if you both want out and there isn't any fighting about it. Most cities have a $99 lawyer, with the same if there is nothing to fight about. but I wouldnt trust them too much. I would also tell you to google it, for the state you are filing in.

Since it doesn't sound like there is going to be a battle over custody and there are no assets to figth over, you and your husband can probably get a "pro se" divorce where you fillout your own paperwork and don't bother with lawyers. It depends which country/state you live in. Try googling "pro se" and the name of where you live.

Hope you guys can still get along - it will be a lot easier for you all, including the child, if you can try to stay emotionally detached while you get it over with.

Better days are coming.

If you have no money, I assume neither does he. So there is not much to fight about except child support and custody. So neither side needs nasty lawyers. You can seek help from social service or women protection service if you have proof. A little complicated if your husband is prone to rage and do crazy things.

It would probably be cheaper if you did it yourself instead of getting an attorney. Contact social services in your area they may be able to point you in the right direction are better yet even handle it for you. Good luck!

Sliding scale attorney or some county offices can tell you of a free attorney. Like in MN you have one day a month you can call in and apply for free representation.

If he is agreeable you can get a disillusionment, which is much cheaper than a divorce, but the result is the same...you will no longer be married, but you have to both agree on who gets what.
If he's not agreeable, just wait until you can afford one. You can do it anytime. Keep your money for a new place.
