You can get people to use these strong wraps that will pull the tree back together. Try that before you cut it down, as huge oak trees are beautiful. I wish we had tried that with the old maple tree that was struck by lightening and split in half. It took it a full year before it started to die, and we had to cut it down. It was a beautiful tree before that.

You need to get a professional to cut it down so it doesn't fall on your garage. Some sawmills with pay you for whole oaks and if they can get lumber sized boards out of it. The guy who cuts it down will also cut it into cordwood (firewood) which you can use or sell. It takes a year to dry out before you can burn it though. People will pay a nice price for seasoned oak wood, it burns forever.
I was also thinking that oaks are pretty resilient, you can cut off the smaller part and eventually it will grow back again if the split doesn't go down too far. But to determine if your tree can recover you would need an expert to look at it.
Whatever you do, do NOT chop it down yourself. You never cut down a tree, you reach a point where it snaps off and the force of a heavy oak coming straight at you would put you in the hospital. It doesn't always fall the way you made the cut. It can fall while you are still choping away and even if you are standing where you think it's safe, it can swing around and you would be hit by the trunk. Get a professional.

I, too, LOVE trees, and am extremely annoyed that there is such an excess of junk mail, but I do all I can to reduce, reuse, and recycle wood, paper, plastic, glass, and other such products commonly thrown away in our modern-day society. On the other hand, however, anthropomorphizing "Mother Earth" is akin to putting "her" on a pedestal as being equal to God, and I am definitely not comfortable with that. But I have full confidence in Jehovah God's promise, found at Revelation 11:18, which reminds us that He will take care of this problem . . . . very soon. Rev 11:18 - (NIV) - "The nations were angry, and your wrath has come. The time has come for judging the dead, and for rewarding your servants the prophets and Your people who revere your Name, both great and small— and for DESTROYING THOSE WHO DESTROY THE EARTH."

If the leaves are still green and it doesn't look dead, I say worship it and make offerings of fruit and flowers at it's roots every sunrise. There is nothing more magnificent than this amazing plant. The chances of the acorn sprouting in the first place are stacked. Praise nature, and stop complaining.
