My 4 month old is rolling over, ALL THE TIME! She rolls herself in her crib the most. My boyfriend is worried about her spending time on her stomach, such as suffocating if she is crying because she rolled over and can't do anything else. Should we be running to her crib every few seconds when she starts to cry after rolling over or should we give her some time to work on her muscles to prop herself up? I really don't know!!

She isn't sleeping on her stomach, we fix that throughout the night! During the day she rolls over and cries. Should we run to her or let her figure it out?

Talk about paranoia. No you should no run to her everytime she cries...she is not going to suffocate if she is on her stomach and cries. She has a head that sits on a neck that actually TURNS...
there is NO proof that being on the tummy causes sids...if it did then 97% of my family wouldn't be alive. The other three percent were those who rolled over onto their backs because they WANTED to be there...not because they were put there to sleep. If you're going to buy into that theory then you will have to buy into the "pets in the home cause sids" theroy, or the "synthetics causes sids" theory. Or the "if the baby's bedroom is below 80 degrees causes sids" as opposed to the if the baby's room is OVER 80 degrees causes sids" to the "a window opened in the bayb's room causes sids" to the "closed windows in the baby's room causes sids" theroies...and the list goes on..

I was just like you with my daughter!
Don't worry, if she can roll over and pick up her own head the danger for her being on her stomach is minimal. Most often, the concern is drowning in her own vomit, or suffocation with stuffed animals or pillows ( don't have those in the crib), she is past that problem if she is doing it on her own. Baby mattresses are not plush, they are actually quite still, for this reason (minimalize suffocation). She sounds strong, her muscles will build as she learns new "tricks". Breathe, she's doing great!

If she is rolling herself onto her tummy, she obviously quite likes it there and it is really good for them to develop their neck muscles, arm muscles and back muscles. My boys would all roll them selfs onto their tummys (from side or from their backs) and to this day they sleep on thier Tummy's! People can blow it all out of proportion regarding how baby sleeps. I used to sleep my boys on their sides tucked in tightly! With the crying, She needs to learn that you will not run at every cry, and you need time to figure out what crys mean what and when it is a cry for assistance, or when it is a cry for attention. There is no rule book remember! We all start out the same :) You will do well with your daughter, Congratulations and all the best, just stay firm in what you decide and remember consistency is the best thing you can give her.

I wouldn't worry about it. By the time they are able enough to roll over on their own, they are fine to be on their tummies. If it is a problem, you could put on of those things in her crib that would keep her on her back or on her side. But, she always needs to learn that she can roll herself back over herself.

If she can roll over she can move her head to keep from suffocating. Keep running to the crib every time she cries and she will learn a BAD habit.

I'm honestly suprised that they haven't tried to pass a law that says "you can't put your baby to sleep on its tummy". Both of my babies slept on their tummy from the day I brought them home from the hospital, it was the only way they would stay asleep.

If she rolls herself over and doesn't like it, then I say YES, go in and help her get back over. Give her tummy time during the day to work her muscles. If she rolls over and likes it there, leave her be.

Does she hold her head up well? If she holds her head up well and can roll over to her tummy by herself, she is alright. If you are worried about it you, could go to babies r us and buy a sleep positioner, which is something they lay on with wedges on each side to keep them from rolling over. The official standpoint is that babies should always be put to sleep on their backs, but that around 4-5 months, most will roll over on to their stomachs and should be left alone.

My roommate is having that problem with her son now. When he rolls over as long as there is no blankets in the way to suffocate the child the baby seems to be ok.

When my kids started doing this, the pediatrician just said to leave them be or they would never learn and never get any sleep. Just make sure there is nothing in the crib with her, blankets, crib pads, etc... this is inevitable, she is going to roll, even when you're asleep. You can do it!

IT'S ALL OF GROWING UP.... WE ALL HAVE DONE THAT.... U SOUND LIKE ME AND IF U KEEP GOING LIKE THIS, IT WILL RUN U CRAZY. FORGET THE SLEEP POSITIONERS FOR A 4 MONTH OLD, SHE'LL ROLL RIGHT ON OVER IT.
DON'T GO RUNNING EVERYTIME SHE CRIES. JUST MAKE SURE THERE IS NOTHING THAT SHE CAN GET AHOLD TO; BLANKETS, PILLOWS, TOYS, ETC... A FEW MINS. WHEN THE CRING HAS STOPPED, THEN TAKE A QUICK CHECK ON HER TO MAKE DOUBLE SURE SHE IS OK....
