The tax codes need to be streamlined but trying to replace it with a sales tax would wreck the whole economy by spurring hyperinflation. The cost of everything you buy would go up. Housing would be unaffordable for most people, it's already nearly there now. The inflation would far outstrip any savings from taxes.

Also, the sales tax is a tax on savings. Those who have money saved would have to pay taxes again on savings they have already paid income taxes on over the years when they earned it.

The proposed flat tax of 17% is more than most people already pay. When you look at what you actually pay, most people pay 15% or less in federal taxes, after deductions.

Actually, back in the early 90's some were pushing for the 'flat tax' everyone pays the same percentage. I think it was something like 17%, and not to increase for some years. But that was turned down. I think it's a good idea, but who'd we sell it to? We're just pee-ons who don't know anything, remember?

Well, rich people would buy all their stuff from overseas, and thus bypass paying any taxes at all.

If you can find a way to make rich people pay up, I think it would be worth a go. Tax season is no fun at all.
