Because to me, Russians look completely different compared to European women. I do not know what it is; they usually have this signature nose and their eyes sometimes look a bit "Asian" if you know what I mean. I think that Middle Eastern people are considered White?

Russians, generally speaking are a mixture of Ancient Greeks, ancient Vikings, and Mongolians, which is why they have such a distinctive look, but to say they are not white or European is as derogatory as to say that Ethiopians are not black or African because they have light skin and Semitic features.

Russians are especially sensitive about this because despite having once been a superpower, their country is experiencing a lot of the same problems as a lot of underdeveloped countries, and Russian immigrants in America have a lot of the same social problems as Latinos and Caribbeans, with elders failing to assimilate while the youth adopt the Gangsta culture. I wouldn't recommend talking to Russians about race, as even their Asian ancestry has a lot to do with rape blood during the Mongol invasion. Also the word Caucasian doesn't mean white in the part of the world they come from but rather Armenian, Georgian, or Azerbaijani. It would be much more uplifting to remind them of the common Orthodox heritage they share with Near Easterns of all complexions, of the mutual respect they cultivated with the Kalmyks (Mongols who swore loyalty to Russia since the 17th century), and so on. I hope this helps.

Russia is a HUGE country. It spans two continents.

Russians are the original Caucasians! Look up the word Caucasian and learn what it really means. Russians are Caucasian by definition.

There are also some Russians who are Asians. Those from Asia for example.

Russia is composed of many nationalities. 80% are slavs (white) or ethnic Russians. 20% are Turkic and Asians. West Russia or European Russia is highly slavic although there are some regions inhabitated by turkics. Siberia is half Slavic and half Turkic and Asian. the Russian Far East has huge Asian population.

Ethnic Russians are descendants from a Viking tribe called the Roos (hence "Roos-ia"), whose original settlement was in Kiev. Centuries later, Genghis Khan's Golden Horde of Mongols conquered the Russians and fore centuries inter-bred with the local population. That is why many ethnic Russians look like Asiatic Scandinavians.

I guess they would be more Caucasian than you and me since part of the Caucasus Mountains are in Russia.

Russia is a smorgasbord of many ethnicities and cultures. Technically, whites or caucasions are descendants of the Indo-European tribe. The link was discovered by William Jones, a British judge in India in the 18th century. He began noticing similarities between Sanskrit and Bengali words to Latin and German. This is a long way of saying that just about anyone from India to Iceland is Caucasian.

I wouldn't dwell on the construction of 'whiteness'. Egypt, whose culture had been heavily influenced by cultures from further south in Africa has recently (18th century) been removed from the continent of Africa. Are you planning to do the same thing by separating Russia from being 'European'?

I know it's more manageable to classify people into categories, but it really isn't all that important and makes things more complex.
