I would have to believe that the true human being is selfish. We have developed the need to survive and that is what put us in the top of the food chain. Our instinct to survive is the key which has put us where we are today and that key is what makes us selfish. Although we do selfless acts at times for those we hold dear to us we are only human and we, even though we do not know of it, put us before anyone else in reality. So is being human a bad thing, No! It's a good thing actually in a world where dog eats dog!

The "primitive" true human being would of course be selfish to ensure their own survival. Everything that is done is for themselves first. But now the human race is not primitive and should not continue to live in a such a selfish manner. Being a little selfish is okay, because sometimes you just have to buy those shoes with the heels. But if you pass a hungry child on the street, you should consider giving your extra money to them.

A little of both and some where in between.
Most people have personal desires, wants, wishes and interests and to some degree will satisfy those. Most people care enough about others to at some points in their lives commit selfless acts.

Selfish.
There are only two true human instincts - to seek pleasure and to avoid pain. People who are considered selfless ultimately act in this way because it gives them pleasure, so we're back at square one.

The answer lies in what a person would be without being taught to be something else. What would a person grow up to be if the person was not taught to "share"?
