If you look at a globe and pretend that you are the sun. Point to the globe and point out N, S, E and West. When you identify East then spin the globe counter clock wise and you will see that the land moving from the dark side to light side is always on the side of east if you were standing on the earth. You can just do this with a basket ball or something. or on a ball make a dot and mark the top N. the right side E, the bottom S and the left side of the dot W. then hold it out at arms length and spin it counter clockwise and you will always see the E first as it comes around to face you.

Whether earth rotates clockwise or counter-clockwise depends on from which direction you look at it. But Sun appears to rise in east and progress towards west in the day, beause the earth is rotating in the opposite direction.

"The One Who Knows" nailed it. Depends which way you look at the earth from, top or bottom. Looking over the top it DOES rotate counter clockwise/ So picture the sun on any side of it, rotating counter clockwise looking straoght down onto the arctic, and you'll see why is rises in the east.
Conversely, looking straight at the earth from "below," and I use that term relatively, straight and antarctica, it rotates clockwise.

Imagine that you are standing next to a globe. With your left hand you are slowly turning this globe counter-clockwise. In your right hand you are holding a flashlight (representing the sun) pointed down at the globe. Now, do this in your mind. You don't really need a globe or a flashlight...just think about it !

Just as you noticed, California is west of New York and it's morning in New York first. This means that the sun rose in the east first.

Because the East is exposed to the sun first before the west is.... take a flashlight and an orange.... it's not that hard to figure out or picture in your head.
