Rachel, it means second gear. To test this put the drive selector in #2 or second gear as you pull away from a stop sign. The engine starts out in first gear and then shifts into second. The transmission will not shift any higher than second gear. The reason for this feature is if your driving in deep snow, mud, sand and or all low speed conditions. Don't go any faster than 20 - 25 mph while in this gear however . If the rpm (revolutions per minute) of the motor would increase over 5,000, damage may be caused to your engine.

the two under drive stands for second gear. if you put the gear selector on 2, the transmission will only shift up to second gear and remain there. depending on the type car you have, your transmission usually shifts to third gear and then into over dive. if you drive in the mountains or where there are steep grades, the transmission can help you from gaining too much speed going down grade by not shifting into the higher gears if it is placed in the 2 position

Usually that gear is used for going up a steep hill, and/or while towing heavy objects. The idea of this is that the engine creates a much higher torque because it will reach higher RPM's. Typically, most people do not need it. But if you are towing heavy objects or find your car struggling to get up a hill, pop it into 2nd gear and see how it helps.

If you have the transmission in D it will also shift into Overdrive. If you shift it into the 2, it will give you more pulling power and traction, because it prevents overdrive from engaging. I would not recommend driving very far in this gear because of high engine rpms and fuel economy.

2 is the next lowest gear, less power, better fuel effeciency but you shouldn't use it for normal driving.
