1st - why does it matter?
2nd - why as adults do we feel the need to label everything - including people, cartoon characters and puppets, is there some underlying need to give things a label so that we feel safer or something?
Bert and Ernie are 2 characters in a children's show, and when children watch the show that is all they see. Its the same as Sponge Bob & Patrick. Children watch these shows with the innocence of being children, where they exist in a world without labels or the need to classify every little thing.
Why is it as adults we then feel the need to put these things into categories and if some people had their way remove these shows or at least the characters off television to stop children watching them - shouldn't we be promoting diversity among friendship in children, that its ok for people of different colors, races, and things to be friends than to try and limit or restrict these things?

Today's culture has been stereotyping Bert & Ernie as a gay couple.

Yes, but Ernie had some issues with his rubber ducky. Burt was okay with it since he has bestiality issues with the pigeons. They are both going to therapy, but may break up.
