Not in the NBA anymore. This used to happen when a player would dunk from the side. The dunker would have to be running baseline, and then dunk it at a 180 degree angle and pull down on the rim. Back in the day this was the reason dunking was outlawed in college games. When the rule was changed, if the backboard was shattered,. usually the team was fined (probably the price of a new backboard and the labor to install it) and the team was charged with a delay of game penalty. In modern NBA and college arenas, there are ultra strong backboards made of fiber glass or carbon fiber. It is impossible to break these backboards, I heard they are bulletproof glass.

yup -
Darryl Dawkins did it
Darvin Ham has done it
Bryant Reeves shattered one at a Final Four practice session once.
Shaq not only has shattered boards - on at least two occasions, he broke the stanchion that holds the thing up. One time, I believe it was at Orlando, the shot clock almost conked him on the noggin he dunked so hard; and I think it was Phoenix where he dunked, and the whole basket stanchion just fell...as if they were lowering it to take it down.

Shaq's been known to shatter a few back in his day. He even pulled it completely down once. Yeah, it has definitely happened.

definitely. Shaq has proved this couple of times. Nothing to do with mere muscle power though..it was due to mis alignment of screws & bolts

Absolutely: Shaq's done it a couple of times, I think Dwight Howard's even done it, that guy's a ferocious dunker.
