Hmmm. What a great question!

My favorites are old fountain pens and old linens. I just marvel at the staying power and beauty. I think that the fascination with antiques is not just personal (family/inherited) but societal: we live in such a now and disposable world that holding a piece of the past feels connecting... grounding. Like you are touching ghosts and history.

If you are willing to settle for something less than museum quality, a lot of antiques are quite a bargain. And the stuff just lasts and lasts!

People are fascinated with objects of a certain age, or anything that has some historical significance. Some of the objects are unusual, and that adds to the interest. There can sometimes be a mystique about the objects -- who might have owned them, where they came from, why they were invented, etc., and all of this can enhance a person's collection. Perhaps some objects don't have a lot of monetary value, but the fascination with them (just for being unusual) is often worth a great deal to a collector.
